THe history of knocknagore Cottage

Knocknagore, derives its name from the Irish “Cnoc naGabhar” which means “Hill of the Goats”. Some people say the description suits us well.It is located in the Ancient Parish of Tullylish between the Town of Banbridge and Portadown. The River Bann meanders through this beautiful area and this area was once home to a thriving Linen Industry, largely down the chemical properties of the water in the River Bann in the area. The Linen Industry was probably one of the biggest industries in Ireland at the start of the 20th Century. It is said that the main road which passes through Tullylish was one of the most industrial roads in the whole of Europe. Thousands of people were employed in the many mills that lined the River Bann, and many of them are still standing today but unfortunately though, no longer in use. John Butler Yeats father of the renowned William Butler Yeats, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest poets of the 20th Century. John Butler Yeats was brought up at the Vicarage Farm, which is only a few hundred yards and visible from Knocknagore Cottage.
